Cofradia, Nayarit Mexico - Monico & Maribel

Monico and Maribel are Cora Indians living in the village of Arrayanes.  They have three children—Carla Joanna (age 3), Santiago (age 2), and Vicente (newborn).  Currently they live in a one-room house made out of sticks and palm.

Approximately one year ago Carla Joanna was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor on her optical nerve.  She has undergone chemotherapy and is waiting to begin radiation.  Her right eyeball has been removed, and she has been fitted for a prosthetic one.

Monico works as a field hand when there is work.  Their house is on his parents yard.  When we asked about their plans to purchase their own lot, they explained that they were waiting until Carla Joanna's medical treatment was complete.  A lot in Arrayanes probably costs around $1,000.
