In the late 80's and early 90's, Tom Hackett, (Alternative Missions founder) was working as a missionary with YWAM, (Youth With A Mission) in Mazatlan Mexico. While leading a discipleship training school and working with surfers to reach communities up and down the coast of Mexico, he was given an opportunity to begin a medical ministry in the indigenous Cora town of Cofradia de Cuyutlan. Tom, along with a team of dedicated workers founded a medical and dental outreach in Cofradia. This was followed by outreaches to the surrounding villages throughout the Central Sierra Madre Mountains and the formation of a new non-profit ministry, Alternative Missions
In 1995, Alternative Missions was invited to the small community of Santa Helena on the far eastern part of the island of Roatan in the Bay Islands of Honduras. There we founded a medical and dental facility, a missions training school and eventually the Helene Bilingual School. Outreaches from this school founded long-term ministries in Puerto Vieto, Costa Rica, Oaxaca, Mexico as well as South Africa and Cuba.
Today, Alternative Missions continues ministry in Central and Southern Mexico, South Africa and Cuba. Outreaches include building homes for families in need through our ministry, Dwellings, church planting, micro businesses, health and education and much, much more. We provide opportunities for both short-term teams and long-term ministry partners to develop creative ways to reach the world.
